What we mean by “live music”
Sessions is a listening bar — a small room built around a hi-fi sound system and curated music programming. We do DJ sets, listening sessions, and themed nights. We don’t book live bands and we don’t have a stage. If you’re searching for live music in Oakland in the traditional sense — touring acts, ticketed shows, a band on stage — Fox Theater and Paramount Theatre (both five minutes from us) are where Oakland’s live music programming actually lives. We’re the cocktail room you walk to before or after.
What Sessions is built for is the kind of music night where the room is tuned to the selection, the volume is paced for conversation early and for dancing later, and the selector is treated as a craft. Tokyo listening bar lineage, brought into a Downtown Oakland room on 15th Street.
Weekly Programming
A weekly themed deep-listen. Selectors set the room and you sink into it. Themes drop on Instagram each Monday for the following Thursday. Quieter early in the night, builds toward 11pm. Cover-free.
The dance floor opens. Funk, soul, disco, anything with a backbeat. Resident DJs hold the room until 2am. Get there before 9 for a seat at the bar; after that it’s standing room.
DJs in rotation. Hip-hop, house, afrobeat, whatever the night asks for. The kind of Saturday you don’t plan, you just go. Late until 2am.
Slower, softer, longer. A quieter room with a recurring daytime series — selectors play start-to-finish sets while the room functions as a Sunday-evening cocktail lounge. The kind of Sunday night you want one more drink on.
Looking for bigger rooms?
For ticketed live music in Oakland — touring acts, full band setups — Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave) and Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway) are the two major rooms in Downtown Oakland. Both are a five-minute walk from Sessions. We’re the cocktail room you land in before the curtain or after the show — open until midnight Thursday and Sunday, until 2am Friday and Saturday.
